Close to Tidrum Nunnery is Drigung Til Monastery, a monastery impossibly grafted onto a sheer cliff face. Drigung was originally the base of the Drigung sub-order of the Kagyu sect, dating from the 12th century. At one time it housed over 500 monks.
For those with an interest in Tibetan Buddhism, Dra Yerpa hermitage, about 16km northeast of Lhasa, is one of the holiest cave retreat.
Being the largest urban wetland in the world, Lalu Wetland National Nature Preserve, also called Lalu Wetland Nature Reserve, covers 12.2 square kilometers, of which the core area is 6.6 square kilometers in the center of Lhasa City, the capital of the Tibet Autonomous Region.
Sitting on Mount Gambo Utse at the western suburb of Lhasa, Drepung Monastery, built in 1416 by Jamyang Choge Tashi Palden, one of Tsongkhapa’s main disciples, is the largest Tibetan monastery as well as one of the Great Three Monasteries of Lhasa, along with Sera Monastery and Ganden Monastery.
Along with Mindroling Monastery, Dorje Drak Monastery is 1 of the 2 most important Nyingmapa monasteries. With a remote and romantic location, it is less accessible than Mindroling Monastery and consequently gets few western visitors.
About 48 km east of Gongkar airport is the turn-off to the 11th-century Dratang Monastery, located 2 km off the main road in the Dranang Valley.
Chim-puk Hermitage is a warren of caves northeast of Samye that was once a meditation retreat for Gulug Rinpoche. After crossing through desert-like territory for a couple of hours, the path ascends into the surprisingly lush area in which the caves are found.
A worthwhile detour from the Lhasa-Tsetang road, between the Dratang turn-off and the Samye ferry crossing, is Mindroling Monastery. It is the largest and most important Nyingmapa monastery.
